Finding the Right Psychotherapist: Checklist

Published on 20 May 2025 at 20:41

A strong connection between a client and their psychotherapist has been extensively researched and shown to lead to the best possible outcomes in therapy. I can attest to this as a client myself. Whether or not my psychotherapist actually cared, if I didn’t feel that they were present/curious/non-judgemental/authentic/, we were going nowhere—together.

Choosing a psychotherapist is a deeply personal matter, and it can often take time to find the right fit, which can feel defeating. There is no single psychotherapist who is right for everyone. Psychotherapists understand this and will not take it personally if they don’t meet your needs or match what you need in a psychotherapists personality. It’s so important that you feel a sense of trust and comfort with the person you’re sharing such vulnerable parts of your inner world with, otherwise we dont share at all.

Take advantage of free consultations offered by many psychotherapists to get to know them a bit more. While it can feel discouraging to “interview” potential therapists, know that you are not alone in that experience. You can do this—you are committed to growth and inner wellness; for yourself and your life.
